Connex ticket insurance

28 03 2007

I think Kevin may be on to something here.  Create an insurance company where you can pay a fee to cover you for public transport fine insurance.  Travel without a ticket.  If you get caught, and are fined, you get reimbursed.

I normally wouldn’t suggest such a nasty (and ultimately self-defeating) tactic but Melbourne’s train service has been well below standard for some time now…

Airshow photos (and Sydney follow-up)

28 03 2007

Sydney was tough on the ol’ body clock.

Working from 8:00 pm till around 6:30 am for two days (nights?) is not my idea of fun but we were productive. We also made a 7-11 store owner very happy as we bought a metric buttload of caffeine drinks (Red Bull gives us wings!).

The next night (day? Saturday morning) Dad and I had to get up at around 6:30 am to get to the airshow. Wowser. I struggled. All worth it though because the airshow was awesome!

The weather was crappy; we were rained on a couple of times. But the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits as we watched jets, choppers and aerobatic nuts do amazing things in the air in front of us.

I’ve put most of the airshow photos online. I wasn’t terribly happy with them, but some came out reasonably well. Hope you enjoy ‘em. :)

[I had a bunch of highlights picked out but I was trying out a new blog editor and I've just lost them all! Too tired to pick them out again; will have to do so in another post.]

Daylight savings…

24 03 2007

…ends Saturday night (well, Sunday morning @ 2am).  Remember to turn your clocks back an hour.

Airshow

20 03 2007

For Christmas, my wonderful girlfriend bought tickets for my Dad and I to go to the AirshowGold  Pass tickets!  I’ve been wanting to go for years so I’m really excited and I know my Dad’s pumped as well.  Looking forward to the weekend!

If you’re also going (Saturday) – or have advice from previous year’s – let me know.

Working. Sydney. L-a-t-e.

20 03 2007

Ugh.  Tomorrow (err, later today) and Thursday I’ll be in Sydney helping to sort out some problems we’re having with our product.  Unfortunately the client can only allow us to work outside of business hours.  Beween 8pm and 4am. Ugh.

Ah well, I tend to be up pretty late anyhow so another couple of hours won’t hurt too much.  Spare a happy thought for me as you drift off to sleep the next couple of nights!  :)

The End of The Show

18 03 2007

My (Everyone’s?) favourite video podcast, Ze Frank’s The Show, is, as promised, coming to a close a year after it started.  Sad day.  Ze, thanks for the massive effort that went into The Show and the laughter and happy memories that came out.  Looking forward to your next venture!

Look out for cyclists

12 03 2007

Many of you will know AdrianU; he was recently hit by a car while cycling in the bike lane. Although he did the up and over thing he’s OK, just grazed and bruised.  Point of the story: if you’re driving watch out for bike riders.

iPod/iTunes ain’t perfect for podcasts

5 03 2007

I began listening to a a speech this morning by Dave Winer. He started talking about how no current media device was great for managing podcasts. I’m only 6 mins in so I’m not sure what else he’s going to cover but I’ve been meaning to write about the problems with the iTunes/iPod platform for this application for awhile.

Maybe Dave or Apple can make use of this feedback!

If you’re in a hurry, I’ll save you the details, here’s the summary: The iPod/iTunes is only an adequate device for managing podcasts. (Though it’s pretty damn good for managing your music collection!)

Now, on to the details:

  • If I’m midway through playing a podcast when I sync the iPod the currently playing podcast is deleted
    • This is the worst issue IMO and I consider this a defect
  • Podcasts are mixed in amongst the music
    • I don’t want to see them when I am browsing my music collection!
    • And I definitely don’t want it to artifically increase the stats about how many albums/artists etc I have in my collection
  • There are two menus I have to navigate when viewing/listening to my podcasts
    • Videos->Video Podcasts and just regular Podcasts
    • They should be all under one menu
      • Or Podcasts->Audio and Podcasts->Video
  • The RSS recommended by iTunes is shonky, proprietary and harder to implement than it should be
  • Bittorrent-supplied files aren’t recognized by iTunes
  • It would be nice if iTunes gave you the option to normalize a podcast (automatically?), perhaps with something like the Levelator

I’d love to see all these problems addressed…or iTunes/iPod opened up so I can fix ‘em. ;)
