After getting our hands on a 2007 Toyota Corolla (hire car covered by insurance) we decided to stick with our plans and head down to Apollo Bay. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the drive down the Great Ocean Road, especially the windy section between Lorne and Apollo Bay. One day I’ll take a sports car down there. One day. 🙂
We hadn’t booked any accomodation but being midweek in the off-season there was plenty to choose from. We were lucky enough to stumble on Chocolate Gannets. 100 metres from the ocean and a k or two before A.B., it was a good place to relax and unwind. The best features were the close proximity to the beach (going to sleep with the sound of waves crashing is always fantastic), the large spa with doors opening toward the ocean, plenty of space, the fireplace, a dual-head shower and great appliances including a sensational coffee machine.
And the place was big. We’re thinking we may return someday with another couple to share the cost.
Glenoe Cottages probably remains the favourite of Apollo Bay accomodation, but they’re expensive. Gannetts is damn good, closer to the ocean and with more space. A great alternative.
We returned after two nights wishing we could have stayed longer…
