The Paris Metro

5 06 2008

The Paris Metro is a fantastic rail service. I can’t help but compare it to Melbourne’s Metlink…and the comparison does not bode well for my home city.

The Metro is cheaper. A 10×2 hour ticket on Metlink costs A$28. A 10 ticket carnet on the Metro, roughly equivalent, costs 11€10, about A$18.

The Metro runs trains more frequently. The longest I’ve waited for a train on the Metro is four minutes. Typically it’s one or two – and that’s almost any time of the day. Even in peak periods Metlink doesn’t come close and offpeak? Forget it!

The Metro can take you anywhere in the city. It’s a large multi-line network that can take you to any part of the city quickly. In Melbourne, unless you are traveling somewhere on your “spoke of the wheel” you’ve got to go through the city.

We have a lot to learn from the Metro!
